Eurolang schrijft dat Iers Gaelic, de oorspronkelijke Keltische taal die in Ierland wordt gesproken, bijna de status van officiele Europese taal bereikt heeft. Een punt van zorg voor de Ieren zijn de (ook Keltische) taalperikelen in Spanje:

"(...) There is some concern in Ireland that the Spanish Government’s request to have Catalan, Galego and Basque accepted as official languages could impinge on the Irish request. Any decision to amend the list of official and working languages needs to be agreed unanimously and if the Spanish Government’s request is refused, this could lead to a Spanish veto on the Irish request. (...)"
