Nieuwe Shuttle-vlucht nadert

Twee jaar en drie maanden nadat Space Shuttle Columbia bij terugkeer in de dampkring uit elkaar viel, staat de lancering van een nieuwe Shuttle-vlucht op de agenda van Nasa (wat is er vernieuwd?). Via deze RSS-feed zijn de laatste ontwikkelingen rondom de vlucht STS-114 te volgen. Nasa licht de missie toe:

"(...) The seven-member Discovery crew will fly to the International Space Station primarily to test and evaluate new procedures for flight safety, Shuttle inspections and repair techniques. (...)"

Het bezoek aan het ISS lijkt overwegend een Amerikaanse geste naar de ISS-partners. De Verenigde Staten hebben hun zinnen gezet op lange ruimtereizen, via de maan naar Mars. Het ISS levert nuttige kennis op over buitenaardse woonruimtes maar is geen hoofddoel meer in het Nasa-programma.

ESA needs the Shuttle to deliver its Columbus laboratory to the ISS, where it will enable international crews to conduct a variety of experiments in material sciences, medicine, biology and technology. (...)"
