Rich Skrenta van Topix.net nam de moeite om een essay te schrijven over de recente ontwikkelingen bij Google. (via Jason Kottke over GooOS)

Twee passages:

"(...) What is this platform that Google is building? It's a distributed computing platform that can manage web-scale datasets on 100,000 node server clusters. It includes a petabyte, distributed, fault tolerant filesystem, distributed RPC code, probably network shared memory and process migration. And a datacenter management system which lets a handful of ops engineers effectively run 100,000 servers. Any of these projects could be the sole focus of a startup. (...)"

De meervoudig gedistribueerde aard van de dataopslag zou een reden kunnen zijn dat Google niet kan garanderen dat e-mail ook echt verwijderd wordt als een Gmail-gebruiker post wil wissen. Google meldt in het privacybeleid van de maildienst immers niet te kunnen garanderen dat verwijderde e-mail daadwerkelijk helemaal gewist wordt (N.B. "(...) Residual copies of email may remain on our systems (...)"). Dit leidde afgelopen dagen tot rumeur rond dat privacybeleid.

Skrenta besluit zijn betoog met:

"(...) This computer is running the world's top search engine, a social networking service, a shopping price comparison engine, a new email service, and a local search/yellow pages engine. What will they do next with the world's biggest computer and most advanced operating system?"

Een gok? Een instant messenging-client met als optie de gedefinieerde Orkut-vrienden en -groepen te gebruiken als white-list annex antispammechanisme, wat ook voor Gmail kan gelden.
