De Britse kabelaar NTL onderzoekt en beproeft sinds vorige maand of ze via BitTorrent tv-programma's en films uit kan zenden zonder het risico te lopen dat de bestanden gestolen worden. Dat is schijnbaar een van de eerste signalen dat BitTorrent een legitiem distributievhikel is voor mediabedrijven. Light Reading meldt dat BT een eigen videowinkeltje wil beginnen:

"(...) One of the best-known names in peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing, BitTorrent , plans to take a more active and profitable role in Internet video distribution by opening its own retail site, Light Reading has learned. (...) BitTorrent spokeswoman Lily Lin tells Light Reading her company is now in licensing negotiations with several content owners. (...)"

Columist Robert Cringely ziet p2p als 'broadcasttechniek' wel zitten:

"(...) By using excess upload capacity of client nodes as repeaters, putting together 64 gigabits-per-second actually isn't that hard. Stealing 256 kilobits per client would require a total of 256,000 participating clients to do the job, which is only 2.5 percent of the total "Desperate Housewives" viewer population. (...) Of course, there is an argument against all of this, that the ISPs won't allow it. But understand that it is my job to look into the future, and as explained above, there simply is no alternative to this kind of solution if the Internet is to grow and subsume these more traditional media types. (...)"
