Ga alvast maar sparen, ruimtetoerisme wordt realiteit. De Amerikaanse overheid heeft Mojave Aerospace Company/Scaled Composites (van Microsoft-oprichter Paul Allen) toestemming gegeven om zijn ruimtevaarttechnologie te exporteren naar Engeland. Want aan de andere kant van de Noordzee is Virgin Galactic statutair gevestigd. Overheidstoestemming was nodig omdat ruimtevaarttechnologie wat 'gevoeliger' ligt dan het recept van een hamburger.

Het bedrijf uit Richard Bransons Virgin Group wil vanaf 2008 commerciele retourtjes ruimte gaan verkopen. Kosten per kaartje: 200.000 dollar. Enorm comfortabel zal de heen- en terugreis niet zijn. De welgestelde ruimtereizigers betalen twee ton om met zijn negenen hutje mutje in SpaceShipTwo te zitten. SS2 zal worden gelanceerd van onder een groter vliegtuig, White Knight Two (Eve).

Will Whitehorn, de baas van Virgin Galactic, zegt in een interview met Space.com over Amerika's goedkeuring voor de transatlantische technologieverhuizing:

"(...) It allows us to activate all the parts of the project," such as use of technology—SpaceShipOne’s reentry concept and hybrid rocket motor design, for example—that can be licensed through Paul Allen’s Mojave Aerospace Ventures. (...) The DDTC understood the commercial rather than the military nature of the project, he said, and bodes well in the long-term, perhaps, for other private-sector space efforts. (...) Whitehorn said that next steps can now be taken to construct SpaceShipTwo, hopefully, in the next 8 months, and all of the things that lead up to building the vehicle. (...) Last month, Branson, announced that he had teamed up with aerospace designer, Burt Rutan of Scaled Composites to form a new aerospace production firm: The Spaceship Company. (...)"
